Please read, it will help you save money on gas. You Can Do It YOURSELF
Hello everyone, I am here to help you fight the increasing prices of gasoline. You might ask me why I take the time to educate people on how to save money at the pump. I truly believe that if we all will do our part that we can make a difference.
The first thing you should do is give your vehicle a good over haul. The following examples are very simple ways that you can improve your gas mileage and get more mile for your buck.
If you don't know how to do any of the following examples feel free to ask me and I can help you.
1. Start by checking the air pressure in your tires. Refer to your owners manual on how much air your tires should hold. Weather alone can effect your tire pressure. The colder the weather the less air your tires tend to have. The hotter the weather the more pressure your tires will tend to have.
(Having too little pressure in your tires can and will decrease your gas mileage.)
2. The second thing you should do is change your air filter. This is one of the most commonly over looked things on a vehicle and a dirty air filter will not allow your car to breath properly causing your gas mileage to go down as well. If you don't have the money to replace it, at least try to shake as much dirt out as possible or blow the dirt out with an airgun.
3. Periodically check your spark plugs. There are several vehicles that could greatly increase there gas mileage just by replacing some very inexpensive spark plugs. If you do this your self, be sure to gap the plugs correctly as this too can decrease your gas mileage.
4. Be sure to change your oil every 3 to 4 thousand mile's. Old oil can cause your engine to work way to hard and decrease your gas mileage as well.
5. Periodically have your catalytic converters checked as a faulty one can greatly decrease your gas mileage.
The next segment talks about things you can do to improve your gas mileage.
1. Don't use your heater or air conditioner unless you just need to. The more things you have powering off of your car the more pull it puts on your engine thus causing your gas mileage to go down.
2. Use your cruise control every chance you get when you are out on the highway. The steady speed will cause your car to get better gas mileage than if you go slow and then speed up and so on.
3. Keep a safe distance behind other vehicles. The more you have to stop and start again the more gas you use. Ever wonder why a vehicle gets better gas mileage on the highway then it does when you drive in town? The answer to that question is your vehicle burns a lot of gas just getting started after coming to a stop. The more stops you have to make and the more you have to use your brakes the worse your gas mileage will be. Remember to keep a safe distance and try not to use your brakes so much. This will ultimately increase your gas mileage. I dare you to try it and get back to me.
4. I will end with this one. There are several products out there that you can buy for your gas tank. A lot of them do the trick and I have found a fuel additive that works really well and you only have to use it every time you change your oil. Feel free to ask me more about this and I will be glad to share it with you.
The following segment talks about the best time to fill up your tank.
1. I will start by telling you to never let your gas gauge get below a quarter of a tank of gas. When you do, your vehicle will start to burn the gas at the bottom of the tank which means it is burning the junk that sets at the bottom of your tank as well. This junk equals dirt and left overs that your car inherits due to purchasing unclean gasoline.
2. If you see a gasoline tanker at the station you usually fill up at, don't buy gas that day. When these tankers fill up the station with gas it stirs up the junk that is in the bottom of the service stations tanks which in return goes into your tank and you don't want that.
3. Fill up during the colder parts of the day. Gasoline like many other things evaporates and you will get more gas for your buck when you fill up during colder parts of the day.
4. When you are filling your vehicles up, don't hold the trigger full blast. The faster you pump the gas, the better chance you have of it evaporating as well. So remember, even though you are in a hurry, it will be to your benefit to pump your gas slower.
This concludes my hub on how to increase your gas mileage. I hope that you have learned something from all of this.
I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
Thanks Shane

Anything we can do to help increase our fuel efficiency is OK in my book! I change my oil, get the engine checked & updated on a regular basis. I now drive a little slower to get to places and enjoy the scenery (as much as is safely possible while driving!!!) as I go.
I find I have rediscovered the joy of driving by being less stressed & hurried getting from point A to point B.
Great tips here drummer boy. Gas saving tips are a great thing to share, especially in today's day and age. I wrote some gas saving tips here:
http://www.qassia.com/gas-saving-tips
and here:
http://www.qassia.com/additional-gas-saving-tips
It's always a good thing to save money, right?
Great tips! I didn't know the quarter-of-a-tank thing. I'll have to fix that. It costs just as little to fill the top quarter as the lower quarter I guess. I only put in about that much at a time on the premise of just buying what I need.
Thanks Shane. These are very informative. Every little bit helps. :)
Would you be so kind as to tell me wtf cadilatic converter is?
My pleasure and thank you for fixing the spelling :)
I have several more questions for you, though. If you don't mind I'll ask them one by one.
Could you kindly explain please how clogged air filter affects the mileage of the modern car with fuel injection and catalytic converters, where computer controls air/fuel ratio and does not let it deviate from preset numbers?
Great hub! I never considered that the gas could evaporate while filling up. In regards to filling up during colder weather days, don't the stations keep the gas at a regulated temperature so the price is consistent?
The first tip, the one about air pressure in tires, I completely agree with. Making sure your tires have enough air is very important, and should be checked frequently. But if your tires lose air very quickly very often, then there may be a problem with the tires or something else. For many months I was in this situation, until I noticed that there was a nail in one of my car tires!
Once again, excellent hub, you've listed some really good tips here. With gas prices so high (here in Canada - 1.25/L), it's become necessary to save when ever possible.
This is a very informative hub and I'm interested in the helpful fuel additive as well! Thanks :o)
Drummer boy, I think it is not to the people benefit when you teach them something you don't know yourself. Blind leading blinds kind of thing. I recommend you pick a subject you know to publish tips on.
Also, just to let you know in case you did not realise this - your termofuel enhancer is a scam or snake oil - whichever name you like better.
Rainbow, you are being scamed :)
Thank you for definition. :)
I use another one - here http://www.thefreedictionary.com/scam - and this is what I meant - but I guess I might be wrong and your business scheme is normal - just what you are selling is the regular snake oil.
You seem to be a nice guy, so I still can't decide how to deal with you. I'll try to explain first, and then we'll see how it goes, OK?
There are two or three sides to your story - depending on how you look at it. First is business side. Let me ask you just one question here - why do you think no single automaker uses the device you are selling on their cars? If it really gives you 10% mileage improvement without any drawbacks, every automaker would have been all over it already, and the guy who invented it would rival Bill Gates in his revenue. Well, the answer is simple - because it doesn't work.
Now second, technical side. I personally spent quite some time testing various "fuel enhancers" in controlled environment. Out of dozens I tested there was no single one to show any worthwhile improvement. Not a single one. You may not believe my word, see what FTC thinks about the matter - http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/autos/aut
And third, also technical. Why tests on your car "proved" it worked? Well, they didn't. You cannot really organize such tests at home so their error rate does not exceed 10-15 %. And at such error rate your claimed 10% improvement is within the error - read does not exist. It is like taking a ruler with 1 inch marks and trying to measure 1/16 length. Another facet to this - when people install such devices, they often do other things to their cars, like regular maintenance and tune-up. In this case there might be some improvement, but it happens because car was brought up to the original specifications.
Hope this explains. Regards, Misha
good tips on when to top on the fuel tank :) i have never tot about the junk that may be resident in the station's storage tanks that could get into my car..
Considering your fuel injectors most probably don't need any cleaning - cause in USA they add cleaning chemicals to gasoline - this is probably waste of money anyway. I don't really care about your money, but I do care about people here on Hubpages being misled into wasting their money, and many of them do not have any money to spare.
That means they will take money from food or other necessities and spent them on the stuff you promote, in the hopes to save some on gas. This also refers to your advice on air filter and oil change. While there are definitely a few good tips on your list, many of them are irrelevant at best.
Tell me what area you are expert in, and I'll try to give you an analogy to your tips, so you can see what I am talking about.
Drummer Boy,
Can you tell me if it is more fuel efficient to fill the tank half full to save the weight of 6lbs per gallon ? A full tank of gas in my Honda Pilot is about 90 lbs of fuel. Your thoughts?
nice tips, we can all use all the help we can get when it comes to saving gas.
I have a car and I will start doing this. Thanks
One other thing thet many people don't even thing of os their o2 sensors. They are what the computer uses to decide how much fuel the engine needs. If they are worn or not reading right, your engine could be running rich or lean. This will make the engine work harder and cost you gas. Also check your gas cap. A leaking gas cap will let the fule vaporise right ont of your tank giving you 0 mpg. Great hub. Mike
